1963: Phoebe Cates is Born, July 16th |
Phoebe was born July 16, 1963 in New York, New York and her real name was Phoebe Katz. However, her father, Joseph, and several other members of her family had adopted CATES as their stage name. Phoebe also "adopted" this stage name as her career blossomed.
Phoebe's father, Joseph Cates, is a television producer. Phoebe's Uncle is Gil Cates, a movie producer.
Phoebe's striking beauty and exotic appearance stems, at least in part, from her mother who was part Chinese. However, other reports on the Internet also list her as having Phillipine heretige. Phoebe herself has mentioned some Russian background.
1977: Phoebe's Schooling and Early Career |
Phoebe attended the School of American Ballet until a knee injury in 1977 caused her to quit. At about the same time she began her career as a successful model. Modelling for various magazine covers, TV adverts, and other advertisements in turn led to offers for television and movie roles.
1982: Phoebe' Movie Career Begins |
"Kids today are much more independent than their parents were," she said. "We're really into getting jobs and we mature sexually much earlier than a generation ago. Or, at least, we are involved in sex earlier."
"Sex, language and nudity aren't the social barriers they used to be. The words that shock our parents are meaningless to us. In our grandparents' time the word 'damn' was shocking but not to our parents."
"So when I say (bleep) today, it doesn't mean any more to me or my friends than 'damn' meant to my parents."
"Young people are more sophisticated today, thanks to magazines and movies and even porno cable television. As a New Yorker I think I've matured faster than other young people. I'm street smart."
"Nudity for the sake of comedy doesn't make you squirm," she explained. "There's a scene in 'Private School' where we all moon. It might shock our elders, but a bunch of nude backsides is funny, not sexy."
"I think kids, especially girls, have much healthier attitudes about our bodies these days. We accept them now without a lot of giggling."
"I was only 17 when I did my nude scenes in 'Paradise.' They were serious and more difficult because they were not easily justified. But the topless scene in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' was funny, which made it easy."
"I'm probably a little more advanced than some teenagers because I'm an actress, but most of the time I'm pretty typical of girls my age. I'm just more visible."

Most Phoebe fans regard Princess Caraboo as Phoebe's crowning achievement. She was not only the star, but carried the entire movie. Here she is at the height of her glory as the regal Princess who held all England in her power. This scan is edited from the cover of the Laser Disk jacket.
Sam Edwards has been posting some wonderful scans from an early Phoebe movie, Paradise, in the newsgroup. For those of you who don't frequent the group or don't have the software to download, here is a personal favorite of mine.
Here's a sensational find by super Phoebe fan LEN CARR. It's 480x600 and can be used as a background, screen saver or wallpapaer. Thanks Len!
An unusually crisp, clear photo from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Head and Shoulders (only, sorry fantasy fans) .jpg that really shows Phoebe's natural beauty.
Here is a picture from the movie "Princess Caraboo" that features both Phoebe and her husband Kevin. The image is a high quality .jpg.
A lovely head and shoulders portrait in .gif format that was used in promoting the movie "Drop Dead Fred."
This is an early picture of Phoebe in a bikini. (.gif format)
We've added this collection even as we attempt to track down the owner, originator. These folks especially appreciate Phoebe's derriere.
